Artist Statement

I like to ask questions. I like to test the limits of rules and make new ones. Everything is an invented concept, and I just want to be me. I don’t want to dwindle and die. I want to dream. I want to explore the worlds I build in my paintings. In them, I am running amongst the sea of figures living their lives, past the multicolored trees, rocks, and houses, swimming through the thick turquoise water that will lead me down a rabbit hole of my own creation. The marks that make up these worlds are smooth, rough, muddy, opaque, and translucent. I do not stick to a uniform language in my paintings because my world is not uniform. Everything I see in these worlds is reminiscent of people, places, and ideas in my life, but I focus on the intricate web of feelings I associate with these things rather than on accurate rendering. There, my feelings convey a deeper truth, and that truth is enough for me, for the time being.

My body intuitively understands fundamental truths about myself, long before my mind does. This creates a game of catch-up, where I attempt to rationalize and break down the body's abstract signals into tangible reasons for how it feels. In this process, a beautiful abstraction is created in the mind, a fascinating mystery for me to solve. Truthfully, I don’t want to solve the mystery. Not yet anyway. Painting allows me to suspend the search for truth while I capture the essence of the mystery and the mood it conjures. Through the journey, the only constant is my intuition, and I must trust it through to the end. At this time, I don’t believe there is a more authentic way for me to paint.
